Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Counselling typically deals with current issues in a persons life that are resolved on a conscious level. Counselling can help a person process powerful emotions such as grief and anger, deal with immediate causes of stress and anxiety, clarify values and identify options when making important personal or professional decisions. Psychotherapy, is a typically longer process that helps a person look at long-standing attitudes, thoughts, and behaviours that have resulted in the current quality of one’s life and relationships. It involves a deeper exploration of the root causes of problems aimed at changing an individuals perspective regarding oneself, one’s life experience, and the world in general. Ultimately, psychotherapy aims to empower the individual by freeing them from the grip of unconscious triggers and old patterns through increased self-awareness.
Practically speaking the client’s goals for therapy dictate whether counselling or psychotherapy is most appropriate, though most client/therapist relationships involve a mix of both counselling and Psychotherapy.
